Shower Refinishing

What Is Shower Refinishing?

Over time, showers can suffer from chips, cracks, stains, and discoloration, leaving them looking aged and worn. Many homeowners believe that replacing the entire shower is the only solution, but this can be costly, time-consuming, and disruptive. Shower refinishing, also known as resurfacing or reglazing, offers a much more affordable and faster alternative. This process restores your existing shower by applying a durable, glossy new coating, making it look and feel brand new without the hassle and expense of full replacement.

How the Process Works

Professional shower refinishing involves a detailed, multi-step process to ensure a smooth, long-lasting finish:

Thorough Cleaning – The shower surfaces are thoroughly cleaned to remove soap scum, mineral deposits, and any other residues that may affect the finish.
Surface Repairs – Chips, cracks, and any surface imperfections are repaired and smoothed out to create an even base for the refinishing coat.
Primer – A primer is applied as a preparatory undercoat to ensure better adhesion of the top layer, improving the durability of the finish.
Finishing – A professional-grade coating is sprayed onto the shower surface in multiple layers to create a glossy, durable, and smooth finish.
Curing – The refinished shower is left to cure, usually for 24 hours, before it can be used again.

The result is a like-new shower that looks polished, refreshed, and durable, with a finish that lasts for many years.

Why Choose Refinishing Instead of Replacement?

Shower refinishing offers several key benefits:

Lower Cost: Refinishing a shower typically costs a fraction of what full replacement would cost, saving you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Faster Process: Refinishing can usually be completed in just a few hours, compared to the days required for replacement.
Less Disruption: There is no need to tear out walls or plumbing, making refinishing a much less disruptive option.
Eco-Friendly: Refinishing extends the life of your existing shower, reducing waste and keeping old materials out of landfills.
Customizable Look: The finish can be tinted to match your preferred style, updating the color and design of your shower without the need for full replacement.

Is Shower Refinishing Right for You?

Refinishing is ideal for showers that are structurally sound but have cosmetic damage, such as:

Chips, scratches, or worn finishes
Stains or discoloration that won’t scrub away
Outdated or faded colors
Rough, hard-to-clean surfaces

However, if your shower has large cracks, leaks, or significant structural damage, replacement may be the better option.

How Long Does It Last?

A professionally refinished shower can last 8+ years with proper care. To maximize its lifespan:

Clean regularly with non-abrasive, gentle cleaners.
Avoid harsh chemicals or scouring pads that may scratch the surface.
Prevent standing water and avoid placing heavy objects that could damage the finish.
Keep caulking around the shower edges to prevent water damage.

Choosing a Refinishing Professional

To ensure a long-lasting, smooth finish:

Research Reviews and Portfolios: Look for before-and-after photos of previous work.
Ask About Materials: Quality coatings and bonding agents make a significant difference in durability.
Get a Quote: Be cautious of unusually low estimates, as they may indicate lower-quality materials or subpar service.

Refinishing your shower is an affordable, eco-friendly, and quick way to bring it back to life. Whether you have chips, stains, or outdated finishes, refinishing provides a practical and cost-effective way to rejuvenate your shower.
